Welcome to the Metacleaner blog

Every file you send out into the world carries a quiet passenger: metadata. The author's name baked into a Word document, the exact GPS coordinates stitched into a phone photo, the camera serial number on a JPEG, the device fingerprint in an Excel spreadsheet, the editing history in a PDF. Most people never see any of it — and most of the time, that's the problem.

This blog is where we'll dig into the practical side of metadata: what's hiding in your files, how it ends up there, who's looking at it, and how to strip it before it becomes a story you didn't mean to tell.

What you can expect

  • Field guides — what each major file format actually stores, in plain English.
  • Real-world incidents — the kinds of leaks that happen when nobody checks before pressing send.
  • Product updates — new file types we support, new cleaning options, integrations with the tools you already use.
  • Workflow tips — quick wins for keeping clean files clean, whether you're a journalist, a lawyer, an HR team, or just someone who prefers not to broadcast their home address with every snapshot.

Why it matters

Metadata isn't inherently bad. It's how Lightroom finds your photos, how Word remembers who edited a paragraph, how Spotify knows the artist of an MP3. The problem is the gap between useful internally and safe externally. The moment a file leaves your laptop, every comment, every revision, every coordinate becomes a potential breadcrumb.

We built Metacleaner because that gap should be closed by default, not by remembering to right-click → properties → remove personal information on every file forever. If you're new here, the cleaner is right on the homepage — drop a file in and see for yourself what comes out.

More posts coming soon. If there's a specific format or scenario you'd like us to cover, let us know.
